After the occupation of Minsk, Volodya Shcherbatsevich and his mother Olga Fyodorovna Shcherbatsevich became members of the anti-fascist underground.
They hid wounded Soviet soldiers in their apartment and helped them to escape from the city.
Among those rescued one of them turned out to be a traitor, who surrendered Shcherbatsevich and other members of the Minsk underground to the Nazis. In captivity Volodya was cruelly tortured for several days, but he was not broken and kept secret from the enemy the names and location of his comrades from the underground.
Vladimir Ivanovich Shcherbatsevich and his mother Olga Fyodorovna Shcherbatsevich were executed on October 26, 1941 – they were publicly hanged in the streets of Minsk to frighten the inhabitants of the city.
